No Open Fields Summer 2009
JLR will not host Open Fields summer 2009. Harsh dry winds and little moisture resulted in too few lavender blooms this summer. Ease your disappointment by shopping our lavender products instead!

West Texas meets Provence, France
At JLR we have settled on two varieties of lavender which work well in our West Texas soil. Provence Lavender Lavandula intermedia is the most fragrant of the lavenders and used in all of our dried products. This variety is a bit more finicky than the Grosso Lavandula intermedia. The Grosso seems to be hardier but takes at least a year longer to perform. We were shocked in 2007 when our Gross bloomed for the first time, the brilliant beauty of the deep purples were in contrast to the more subtle grayish lavender of the Provence. We find that the two mix brilliantly for our brides, who love to use lavender instead of birdseed or rice at their weddings. We also encourage visitors to our fields to get stems from both variety for their own bundles.

In ancient times, the powers associated with lavender were: Love, Chastity, Peace, Longevity, Protection, Sleep, Purification and Happiness. For centuries, lavender was believed to have magical powers, most especially in creating love spells. During the Renaissance, it was believed that if you placed lavender under your pillow at night while making a wish, your wish would come true if anything relating to your wish showed up in your dream.
